The Grav Drive Gauge

The GRV bar that shows up in the UI while you pilot a ship indicates the Grav Drive Gauge. It lets you know how much power you are sending to the grav drive ship module so that you can perform a grav jump.

When you fill up the bar and allocate more power to the GRV gauge, it makes your grav jump launch quicker as shown by the 4 red bars on screen. This makes it a lot easier to escape unfavorable ship battles since you cannot fast travel while in combat.

Do note that adding more power does not make your grav jumps go farther, and you only need one bar to grav jump.

Grav Jumping is how the player travels to other star systems with their ship. You can grav jump by opening up the map menu, zooming out, and selecting a star system you want to go to. If you have not traveled to the star system, or you are in combat, then a 'Jump' button appears to begin the grav jump sequence.
